The Ludwigs-Quartier is a new residential ensemble being developed in the southwest of Ludwigshafen on the former company site of Halberg Maschinenbau GmbH, close by the banks of the Rhine. This projects consists of four “mini blocks”, each made up of eight sections; the outside of each block faces public space, on the inside is a private courtyard. The positioning of the volumes gives rise to a cross-shaped arrangement of public access routes with a small square in the middle. Small commercial units are located in this car-free inner zone and also on the west side towards the river bank, bringing further activity to the new complex.
The strict grid-like layout of the complex is loosened by variations in the design of the individual houses – roof-top terraces cut into the skyline and front gardens enliven the street face. A solid clinker-brick base storey, continuous cornices and window mouldings articulate the façade horizontally. The blocks with five full storeys and a top-floor penthouse generally have four apartments per storey, offering a range of floor plans and apartment types: one to five rooms, for students, for the elderly, for flat shares and a townhouse. Flexible-use commercial units on the ground floor add to the functional and social mix of the new residential complex.
